NEWSTART is an initiative of the Weimar Institute based in the US and has been widely used as a comprehensive formula for living a more fulfilling life. It describes how to take care of our physical, psychosocial and spiritual lives for overall well-being. The lessons described in the classroom can be summarized as:
  1. Nutrition: Focus on consuming a well-balanced diet that includes whole, unprocessed foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. Avoid or limit the intake of processed and unhealthy foods.
  2. Exercise: Engage in regular physical activity to maintain a healthy weight, improve cardiovascular health, and strengthen muscles and bones. Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity exercise per week.
  3. Water: Stay hydrated by drinking an adequate amount of water throughout the day. Water plays a crucial role in digestion, nutrient absorption, temperature regulation, and overall bodily functions.
  4. Sunlight: Get moderate sun exposure, preferably early in the day, to allow the body to produce vitamin D, which is essential for bone health and immune function. However, protect yourself from excessive sun exposure to avoid the risk of skin damage.
  5. Temperance: Practice moderation in all aspects of life, including food, drink, and other pleasurable activities. Avoid excessive indulgence or overconsumption, as it can lead to negative health consequences.
  6. Air: Spend time in areas with clean air and ensure proper ventilation in living spaces. Fresh air is vital for oxygenation, respiratory health, and overall well-being.
  7. Rest: Prioritize quality sleep to allow the body and mind to rest and rejuvenate. Aim for 7-8 hours of uninterrupted sleep per night to support physical and mental health.
  8. Trust in God: Cultivate a positive outlook, maintain faith, and seek support from a higher power. This principle emphasizes the importance of finding spiritual and emotional well-being.

I am 60. I was diagnosed with diabetes 10 years ago and have been using insulin. I am not over weight and am physically active. I do not have the best diet. However, I tried a Whole Food Plant Based Diet for a six week period at one point, but it didn't change my numbers hardly at all. I am willing to try something else to get off insulin. My physician says that with my BMI and my job that I shouldn't have diabetes and he is very concerned.
